I learned about the major events and important people of World War 2. Hitler was the leader of Germany who invaded Poland which started the war in September 1939 after the leaders of Britain and France declared war if the Germans were to invade Poland.Hitler took over a lot of territory in Europe really fast. Everyone was worried what Hitler would do next if he was to take over all of Europe. Would he go to different continents and try and gain power over the world? I learned about the affects of the attack on Pearl Harbor and how the United States was brought into the war after made a bold move. Pearl Harbor was when Japan attacked on the element of surprise. They started by attacking the battle ship row and it escalated from there. The allies were France, United Kingdom, United States, China, Soviet Union, and Denmark. The axis powers were Germany, Japan, Italy, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Hitler gained power in Germany before the Great Depression because he joined the German workers party. This party focused on creating a scapegoat and Hitler blamed the Jews. Hitler started public speaking with his political group and he spoke against the Treaty of Versailles, Marxists and Jewish people. This drew crowds because of the economic crisis and continued anger over the World War 2 defeat and the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. He changed the name of the party to the National Socialist German Workers Party which is also known as the Nazi party. The Beer Hall Putsch caused the Nazi party to be banned. His public speeches were also banned until 1927 because they were considered to inflammatory and agitating. The American Wall Street crash of October 1929 caused the Great Depression. The Great Depression caused the European nations to rely on soup kitchens and other government support. The Great Depression lead to the rise of totalitarian leaders because the leaders made promises about economic recovery.
The end of World War 1 ended with Germany surrendering in November of 1918. In 1919, the leader of Germany at the time signed the Treaty of Versailles which caused Germany to lose various territories, it demilitarized the country and forced Germany to pay a lot of money for reparations. After Germany's defeat, German leaders made a new government known as the Weimar Republic which is a democratic government. With this new government in charge, Germans got new freedoms which included women were allowed to vote, there was a Bill of Rights, and they were able to from political parties. There were problems within the Weimar Republic that made it nearly impossible to form a coalition, paying large reparations negatively impacted the economy and they were blamed for lose of pride in the country. They had economic problems which caused rampant inflation and falling behind of payments as mandated in the Treaty of Versailles. Germany wanted to blame someone for their problems, so they started to scapegoat the Jews. Germans wanted to look to extremist leaders to solve their problems since it seemed the Weimar republic was unable to. |
